2018–2019 Ram 1500 U88 Recall: Refill or Replace the Rear Axle?
A VIN-first guide to Ram U88 rear-axle inspection, 3.21/3.55/3.92 ratios, open versus limited slip, and replacement fitment.

For a VIN-involved 2018–2019 Ram 1500 with low or no rear-axle oil, FCA’s U88 recall procedure calls for replacing the rear axle assembly rather than simply topping it off. Any replacement must match the truck’s axle ratio and open or limited-slip configuration, so model year alone is not enough.
Which Ram 1500 trucks are covered?
Safety Recall U88, NHTSA campaign 18V-556, applies to certain 2018–2019 DS-platform Ram 1500 pickups built from April 23 through August 8, 2018. It does not include every Ram 1500 from those model years, and the DS designation matters because Ram sold different truck generations around this period.
The official FCA dealer instructions say the affected axle assemblies may have been filled with too little oil. Inadequate lubrication can overheat and wear the gears and bearings, producing a whine or growl before premature failure. Confirm involvement by VIN; a build date within the range is not proof by itself.
Use the VIN decoder to confirm the vehicle identity, then check the VIN with Ram or NHTSA for the current recall record and completion status.
Why topping off may not be enough
Gear oil lubricates and cools the ring gear, pinion and bearings. If an axle has operated below the specified level, adding fluid later cannot reverse scoring, pitting, overheating or bearing damage that has already occurred.
FCA’s U88 flow chart reflects that risk:
- If the inspected oil level is within specification, the recall procedure does not call for axle replacement.
- If the oil is low or absent, the procedure directs the dealer to replace the rear axle assembly.
- The fluid-level inspection is performed with the axle at normal level on a suitable hoist.
- A whine or growl is treated as an important warning, not as proof that fresh oil will cure the assembly.
A truck that is not in the recall can still have a leak, incorrect service fill or unrelated axle damage. It needs diagnosis based on its own fluid level, leak path, noise and internal condition.
Six axle combinations appear in the recall
The U88 instructions identify three ratios, each available as an open or limited-slip axle:
- 3.21 ratio: sales code DMC, paired with DS8 open differential or DSA limited-slip differential.
- 3.55 ratio: sales code DMD, paired with DS8 open differential or DSA limited-slip differential.
- 3.92 ratio: sales code DMH, paired with DS8 open differential or DSA limited-slip differential.
Those combinations are not interchangeable merely because they mount under the same generation of truck. A wrong ratio can create serious driveline problems on a four-wheel-drive vehicle because the front and rear final-drive ratios must agree. Installing an open differential where the truck was configured for limited slip can also change function and may conflict with the truck’s build data.
The recall document lists service part numbers for its defined campaign procedure, but a recall parts table is not a general salvage interchange catalog. Verify the original axle tag, build sheet, sales codes and donor assembly before purchase.
Signs that require inspection before buying an axle
A rear whine or growl can come from the ring-and-pinion pattern, pinion bearings, carrier bearings, tires or another driveline component. Before ordering a complete housing, check:
- Whether the sound changes between acceleration, steady throttle and deceleration.
- Rear-axle fluid level and evidence of leakage at the cover, pinion seal, tubes and axle seals.
- Fluid color, burnt odor and visible metal on the magnet or in drained lubricant.
- Pinion-flange play and roughness during controlled inspection.
- Rear wheel bearings, tires and propeller-shaft joints.
- Whether the truck is 2WD or 4WD and whether the front and rear axle ratios agree.
- Open versus limited-slip equipment and any relevant sales codes.
- Open or completed recall status for the VIN.
Do not road-test a truck that is making severe axle noise or showing signs of imminent seizure. Arrange an appropriate professional inspection.
Used rear-axle fitment checklist
Before searching Ram parts by brand, collect:
- Full 17-character VIN.
- DS platform confirmation and production date.
- Two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive configuration.
- Axle ratio: 3.21, 3.55 or 3.92.
- DSA limited-slip or DS8 open-differential sales code.
- Complete axle tag, casting and assembly numbers with suffixes.
- Suspension type, including coil or air suspension where applicable.
- Brake, wheel-speed-sensor and parking-brake configuration.
- Propeller-shaft flange pattern.
- Donor VIN, mileage documentation and clear photos.
Compare brackets, vent location, sensor provisions, brake hardware and flange design. A housing that looks correct in a listing can still have the wrong internal ratio or differential type.
What should be inspected on the replacement assembly?
Check the donor axle for cracked or bent tubes, damaged control-arm and shock brackets, leaks, broken sensor wiring, damaged brake lines and corrosion on sealing surfaces. Inspect the pinion flange for impact damage and abnormal radial or axial movement.
Where records and access permit, check lubricant condition and rotate the assembly to feel for roughness, binding or inconsistent backlash. Confirm that the axle has not been stored with open ports that allowed water or debris inside. A clean exterior is not evidence of healthy gears and bearings.
Installation should follow vehicle-specific procedures for suspension fasteners, brake bleeding, parking-brake adjustment, propeller-shaft alignment, fluid level and any air-suspension service mode. The U88 instructions also specify that replacement axle gear-lubricant level must be verified even when the assembly is supplied prefilled.
Frequently asked questions
Can I just add gear oil to an affected Ram axle?
Not if the U88 inspection finds the axle low or empty. FCA’s campaign procedure directs replacement because the gears and bearings may already have operated without adequate lubrication.
Does every 2018 or 2019 Ram 1500 need an axle?
No. The recall covers a specific DS-platform VIN population built within a defined period. VIN status and the measured fluid level determine the recall path.
How do I know whether the truck has limited slip?
Check the build data and sales codes. In the recall instructions, DSA identifies limited slip and DS8 identifies an open differential. Confirm the physical assembly as well.
Can I install a 3.92 axle in place of a 3.55?
Not as a direct replacement. The ratio must match the vehicle specification and, on 4WD trucks, the front axle ratio. Treat any ratio change as a complete engineered drivetrain modification, not ordinary parts interchange.
What details should accompany a parts request?
Send the VIN, build date, drivetrain, ratio, DSA or DS8 code, original axle numbers, suspension details and photos. A complete parts quote request gives the supplier the information needed to check the correct assembly.
